Hi, I just picked this game up the other day. Ever since I installed it, I've been experimenting with the settings, trying to find one I'm satisfied with. It seems like no matter what changes I make, there is a bit of a slowdown or stuttering in dense sectors, such as in Sol or Andromeda. However, in places like the Lynx or Leo sectors, everything runs just fine. Can anyone tell me what I can do to solve this slight problem?
My specs are:
AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (2 GHz)
PNY Geforce 7600 GS (512 MB) 8xAGP - Latest drivers installed
1 GB DDR 333 RAM
Sound Blaster Audigy EAX
Windows XP Service Pack 2
These are the game settings I'm trying to use:
Resolution: 1024x768
Color: 32 bit
Refresh Rate: 75 Hz
Texture Quality: High
Sky Box Quality: Medium
Particle count: Low
Light: Normal
Anti-Aliasing: None
Shader model: 3.0
Physics detail: High
And everything is checkmarked except Vertical Sync, Filter Screen, and Pixel Doubling.
LOD distance is maxed, and Rendering distance is set halfway.
Also, EAX 3.0 is enabled, and sound quality is set to High.
With these settings, my benchmark score is
............................................
Benchmark ............................................ Score: 6198.4 Max FPS: 70.0 Average FPS: 32.1 Min FPS: 5.0 ............................................ I've turned on Filter Screen and Pixel Doubling and have gotten a higher score on the benchmark, but it takes away the "crispness" of the graphics and makes relatively no difference when it comes to the slowdown in Sol or Andromeda or similar.
I've already read about the default settings on another thread, but what would be the best game settings for my computer?
Also, out of curiosity, does a higher refresh rate have any major impact on performance?
Will the 1.2 patch possibly solve slowdowns like what I'm experiencing?
Thanks. Edited by Torr - 25 Mar 2008 at 00:53 |

6198.4 is not so big score so it's ok to expect lag and glitches (physics object jumping etc).
Don't use high physics because CPU isn't that fast and I think is much better to use 2.0 shader for that card. Edited by LevaOpaki - 25 Mar 2008 at 10:24 |

Okay, thanks. I'm going to try overclocking my videocard to see if that yields any better results. I've recently read in some reviews that Geforce 7600 GS cards come slightly underclocked compared to the GT model, so I'll play with Riva Tuner a bit and see what happens.
EDIT: Okay, I've tweaked my videocard a bit and adjusted a few graphics settings.
Graphics changes:
Resolution: 1024x768
Color: 32 bit
Refresh Rate: 60 Hz
Texture Quality: High
Sky Box Quality: High
Particle count: Low
Light: Soft
Anti-Aliasing: None
Shader model: 2.0
Physics detail: Normal
I've also unchecked Fine LOD and Volumetric Fog. After running the benchmark, I got the following:
............................................
Benchmark ............................................ Score: 8417.6 Max FPS: 95.0 Average FPS: 42.0 Min FPS: 5.0 ............................................ A decent improvement. I'll continue experimenting with the graphics and see if I can get better quality with my videocard tweaks. (Right now the core clock is at 500 MHz and the memory clock is at 405 MHz. Appears stable.)
EDIT2: Alright, I bumped my core clock up to 560 MHz (on par with the GT model) and everything seems stable.
I changed the Particle Count to Medium, enabled Volumetric Fog, and increased the Rendering Distance to Full.
The new benchmark score is
............................................
Benchmark ............................................ Score: 8201.6 Max FPS: 55.0 Average FPS: 41.6 Min FPS: 5.0 ............................................ Average FPS is a .4 difference. Not bad considering that I raised the graphics settings. Overall, this is a substantial improvement over the 20-30 FPS average I had using these same settings before overclocking my videocard.
