![]() Topic: Space Force FAQ (Update: 05-10-07)Posted: 05 Oct 2007 at 15:40 |
|
In response to user requests, I've decided to write a new and up-to-date FAQ for Space Force as both of the current Q/A threads were made pre-release. As with most FAQs, the idea is to cut down on repeat posts by providing all the most common answers in one place.
If you have any suggestions regarding Q/As that should be added, please post them here and I'll update the FAQ. If your suggestion already has an informative thread, please provide a link to it.
To keep things tidy and make suggestions easy to find, please do not use this thread for actually asking or answering questions. If the answer you want isn't here, use the Search function. If you still cant find an answer, make a new post in the General Discussion forum.

1. Feature Questions
Q: What are the system requirements for Space Force?
A: The requirements are as follows:
Minimum:
Operating System: Windows® 2000/XP/Vista(TM)
CPU: 2.0 GHz Pentium® 4 RAM: 768 MB RAM CD-ROM: 4x (or PC DVD-ROM Drive) Video: DirectX(R) 9 Compatible Graphics Card (Radeon(R) 9500, GeForce(R) 5800) Sound: 16 Bit Sound Card DirectX(R) 9.0c Hard Disk Space: 3 GB Available Input: Keyboard, Mouse and Speakers Recommended: Operating System: Windows® 2000/XP/Vista(TM) CPU: 2.6 GHz Pentium® 4 RAM: 1 GB RAM CD-ROM: 4x (or PC DVD-ROM Drive) Video: DirectX(R) 9 Compatible Graphics Card (Radeon(R) x800, GeForce(R) 6800) Sound: 3D Compatible Sound Card With Support For EAX 3.0 DirectX(R) 9.0c Hard Disk Space: 3 GB Available Input: Keyboard, Mouse and 5.1 Speakers Q: Will there be a digital release of Space Force?
A: Yes. Space Force is available via Steam and can be found here.
Q: What copy protection does Space Force use?
A: In an effort to prevent issues for those that purchase Space Force legitimately, there is no copy protection.
Q: Will Space Force be released on consoles?
A: There are no plans for a console release at this time.
Q: Does Space Force have a multiplayer mode?
A: The retail release does not include a multiplayer mode, though it may be introduced in the future (patch or expansion). However, there is some multiplayer code within the game that can be enabled. More information can be found here.
Q: What control methods does Space Force use?
A: Either mouse/keyboard or joystick/keyboard. At this time there are various issues regarding joystick support (info here), but these will hopefully be addressed in a patch.
Q: Are there planetary landings in Space Force?
A: No, afraid not.
Q: Does Space Force have capital ships and can they be used by the player?
A: Yes, there are capital ships but they are only used by the AI.
Q: How big is the Space Force universe?
A: There are 46 main sectors as well as some hidden locations.
Q: How many ships are there in Space Force?
A: There are 14 ships available to the player. There are also other ships (cargo vessels and capital ships) which are only used by the AI.
Q: How many races are there in Space Force?
A: There are 11 races populating the the various sectors of which 9 are playable.
Q: What game modes does Space Force offer?
A: There are two game modes, Story and Free. Story mode puts you in the role of a member of the EMD (human) and has a linear storyline. However, you are free to do as you please and can perform story missions whenever you like. Free mode allows you to choose a race and starting ship. The main gameplay is identical, but the story missions are disabled.
Q: Is Space Force an RPG?
A: While Space Force is not strictly an RPG, it does contain RPG elements. For example, your pilot will gain experience and 'level up'. Instead of a skill system, the player can spend money to upgrade their ships statistics in a number of areas. There are also various 'side-quest' style missions available in both Story and Free mode. Finally, on pilot creation you can pick a 'profession' which determines some basic skills and can provide various bonuses.
Q: Can I buy multiple ships and build myself a fleet?
A: No. This isn't X3.
Q: Is Space Force identical in every way to Freelancer, making it like a 'Freelancer 2'?
A: NO. Its a completely different game made by a completely different Dev team. If you want Freelancer, play Freelancer.
Note: Many Q/As from the above section were taken from the old Expanded FAQ (but re-written).

2. Gameplay Questions
Q: How do I dock with a station?
A: Approach the stations docking bay, which is shown by green flashing lights. When you get close, a diamond shaped icon will appear in the lower left of your screen. After a few seconds it will highlight. Press the 'Dock' key (default Enter) to enter the station.
Q: How do I activate satillites?
A: Approach the satillite slowly. When you are close, you will see an icon appear in the lower left of your screen. Press the 'Dock' key (default Enter) and the activation will begin. Stay within range until the status bar is full.
Q: How do I increase my reputation with a race?
A: There are a number of ways. Firstly, you can head to the nearest station and perform missions for the race. On completion your rep will rise. Secondly, you can destroy ships belonging to a races enemies... although this will lower your rep with the race that owned the destroyed ship. Finally, you can 'bribe' a race into liking you on the Diplomacy screen.
Q: What do the reputation levels mean on the Diplomacy screen?
A: Hostile races (0-20%) will always attack you on sight. Neutral races (20-80%) may or may not attack you. Friendly races (80-100%) will never attack you unless you attack them first.
Q: How many wingmen can I have?
A: It depends on the profession (class) you choose when you create your profile. The number of possible wingmen is listed in the class description.
Q: How do I enable Mega Speed mode?
A: From the cockpit view, press the 'Camera' key (default C) for a 3rd person view. Press it a second time for a freely rotateable view, which also enables Mega Speed mode. You cannot control your ship in this mode! Press the 'Camera' key a third time to return to the cockpit view (and disable Mega Speed).
Q: How do I pick up cargo containers dropped by enemy ships or mined asteroids?
A: Approach the container and point your aiming reticule at it. It will be highlighted with a round icon. Press the 'Teleport' key (default T) to beam the container onto your ship.
Q: Why cant I salvage the large ruins?
A: The large ruins are simply decoration and cannot be interacted with. The salvagable debris are small blocks of junk with wires poking out of them. They can be beamed onboard in the same way as a cargo container, though your ship will need at least 30 in its Energy stat to do so.
Q: Where can I store my items and equipment?
A: Most systems have a repository building located very near the main station (the one you jump to after pressing the 'Jump to Station' key). Its a large squarish building that will have a small blue circle near its entrance. Approach that circle and hit the 'Dock' key (default Enter) when you see the docking icon. Note that the repositories are independant of each other... in other words, they do not share a central 'bank'. If you store something in Solar for example, you'll have to return to Solar to get it.
Q: How do I mine asteroids?
A: First of all, you will need to equip your ship with Mining Tools, which are available from most stations. Approach an asteroid and hold down the 'Mining Tool' key (default Insert). After a few seconds the asteroid will break up, and any useable minerals will appear as a cargo container.
Q: My ship can equip two guns/missiles. How do I switch between them?
A: For guns, press the 'Primary Weapon' key (default NumPad 4). For missiles, press the 'Secondary Weapon' key (default NumPad 5). You can fire either weapon on its own or both at the same time.
Q: What are the different fire modes and how do I select them?
A: To switch mode press the 'Fire Mode' key (default comma). The modes are Normal, Burst Mode (fires fast, short bursts) and Sniper Mode (fires single, very powerful shots). To use Sniper Mode you will need to equip your ship with a Sniper Tool.
Q: What does the Damage Booster do?
A: It increases the damage you do to capital ships.
Q: How do I know which race is the target of a side-mission?
A: Unfortunately, you wont know until you arrive at the mission marker. However, there is a mod available which adds the target race to the mission descriptions. You can find it here.
Q: What do ID cards do?
A: The purpose of an ID card is to allow you to dock at a hostile station. The percentage of the card shows how likely it is to work. When you successfully dock, the card is used up and disappears from your inventory. ID cards will not stop hostile ships from attacking you.
Q: How do I hack a building?
A: First you will need to equip your ship with a Hacking Tool. Approach the building and stop when you are close. You now need to select (not target) the building by pressing the 'Select Object' key (default P). You should see a green square over the building. Now simply press the 'Hack Building' key (default I). You can find more info in the Space Manual for Novices.
Q: Can I continue playing after the storyline has ended?
A: Yes, you are free to do as you please after completing the story.

3. Misc Questions
Q: Is Space Force moddable?
A: To some extent, yes. There are a few areas which can be modified (such as adding new ships) but many more areas are unaccessable. However, there has been talk of the Devs releasing modding tools and editors that should allow us to do much more. The first editor (alpha) can be found here. For modding info, check the Modding Forum.
Q: I have some ideas for game improvements/new features. Where should I post them?
A: There is a dedicated Suggestions Forum. However, be sure to read and follow the strict Rules, otherwise your posts will be deleted.
Q: Can I listen to my own music while playing Space Force?
A: Yes. WinAmp can be controlled from within the game. Turn off the in-game music and start WinAmp. You can then use the Space Force console to issue commands. For example, 'WinAmp Play', 'WinAmp Stop', 'WinAmp Next', etc.
Q: My joystick isn't working properly. What can I do?
A: Join the club. Go to this thread for more info. If you cant solve your problem and your joystick hasn't already been listed, make a post in that thread.
Q: Why wont Space Force run on my system?
A: Check the very first question in this FAQ or this thread to see if your system meets the minimum requirements. Note that mobile (ie. laptop) hardware isn't officially supported. Also ensure that all of your drivers are up to date, and try lowering the games graphical detail (such as the shader version, HDR lighting, etc). If all else fails, check the Tech Support Forum.
Q: I have the Steam version and have applied the patch, but the menu screen still shows v1.0.0.0. Whats going on?
A: There seems to be an issue when attempting to apply the patch to the Steam version. A workaround is to create an empty folder on your HD and point the patch installer to it. Once complete, move all the files from that folder into your Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Space Force Rogue Universe folder (overwriting where required). More info can be found here.
Q: There doesn't appear to be a patch for my region. Which patch do I use?
A: If the publisher is JoWood, use the UK patch. If the publisher is DreamCatcher, use the US patch. Patch links can be found here.

Hi Goffik
Just a note on using the Hacking Tool. You say select object (default P) and start hacking (Default I) In my game the "P" key is defaulted to open communications channel with a targeted ship, and the "I" key is defaulted to check your ships inventory To perform a building Hack, I press the "J" key to select the building, and the "O" key to start the building hack. These were the original defaults. Ie the factory settings as it were, which I havn't changed. Are these defaults different in different regions? Or maybe I purchased the game in a box, whereas yours maybe downloaded? Just thought I would query this as assume a lot of Rookies may read your FAQ It's a good FAQ though, wish I'd seen it when I first started playing. Would have saved a lot of time and unnecessary deaths!!! Edited by Goose - 05 Feb 2008 at 00:58 |

My game is the US disc version, not downloaded. I got those keys directly from the in-game options screen on a fresh install I was using for modding, so I hadn't changed anything. I dont know if the keys are different between versions, but I wont be updating the FAQ because its not my responsibility anymore. |

Sweet as, Goffik. Didn't mean to come across as a knowitall. You obviously got your info from the game.
Seems like there are just different versions out there maybe? Hope all is good in Goffik's Realm Edited by Goose - 08 Feb 2008 at 04:46 |

Yeah, its possible that the key mapping are different between versions either by mistake or on purpose... no idea.
I'm rebuilding GR at the moment, which is why my sig goes to a placeholder. The forums are back online though, and can be reached here, if you're interested.
